Shining a Light of Kindness

When Martha's daughter Rachael was a toddler, life became unimaginably difficult. Living in rural Malawi, Martha struggled to cope with the challenges of raising a child with autism. Rachael was non-verbal, unable to sit still, and often expressed her frustration through difficult behaviours. With little understanding of autism in her community, Martha found herself isolated and judged. Instead of receiving support, she faced stigma and blame.

As the years went on, the strain took a devastating toll on her mental health. Feeling completely alone and unable to see a future for her daughter, Martha lost hope.

Then, during a routine visit to hospital, everything changed.

Rachael was referred to a St John of God community-based mental health service, supported by generous donors. There, she received specialist support tailored to her needs, while Martha and her husband were offered counselling and guidance to help them navigate the challenges they faced.

Today, Rachael attends a school where teachers understand and support children with additional needs. She is thriving. And Martha no longer faces her challenges alone.

What was once a story of despair has become a story of hope, resilience and possibility.

Every year, services like these support hundreds of children and families in Malawi.

The impact reaches far beyond one child, helping parents, siblings and entire communities build brighter futures together.
