Better Spaces & Places

Sensory Rooms

For a child with sensory processing differences, the world can be overwhelming. A well-designed sensory room changes that, offering a space where light, sound and texture can be controlled, where a child can regulate, relax, and simply be. St John of God sensory rooms are built around the needs of the children who use them, not the budget that funded them. Your support funds the equipment, the installations and the specialist advice that makes a room personal.

Gardens & Outdoor Spaces

Some of the most powerful moments in a person’s day happen outside. A walk at their own pace. Hands in soil. Sunlight on their face. The sound of birds rather than a busy corridor. For people in our residential, school and day services, access to a well-designed outdoor space isn’t incidental to their care, it’s part of it. Your support funds the design, planting, seating and accessibility adaptations that turn an underused patch of ground into somewhere people genuinely want to be.

Specialist Schools

Every child deserves a school that sees them. Our seven specialist schools across Ireland are built around children whose needs the mainstream system is not always equipped to meet – children whose potential, not their diagnosis, sets the pace. In Malawi, Elvira Special Needs School in Mzuzu is the only school of its kind in the country, providing specialist education to almost 400 children with autism, intellectual and physical disabilities and Down syndrome, and working to move children who are ready into mainstream schooling alongside their peers. From communication therapies to creative arts, what unites every school we support, wherever it is, is the belief that the right environment changes everything. Your support funds the equipment, the things that go far beyond the classroom.

Housing & Independent Living

For Sinéad, having her own front door changed everything. It meant choosing what to have for breakfast. Deciding when the lights went out. Having a place to invite a friend. Our housing and independent living services help people with intellectual disabilities to live on their own terms, with the right level of support, in the right environment, as part of a real community. Your support funds the adaptations, the furnishings, the technology and the training that makes independent living genuinely possible, not just on paper.

Accessible Buildings & Refurbishments

An inaccessible building is a barrier before anyone has even walked through the door. Ramps, wider doorways, accessible bathrooms, lift installations, these are not afterthoughts. They are the difference between a service that someone can use and one they cannot. Your support funds the refurbishments, adaptations and upgrades that make St John of God buildings accessible, not just legally compliant.
