International Development: Transforming Lives Across Africa

SJOG Foundation supports international development programmes across Africa. Working in partnership with local communities, healthcare professionals and governments, these initiatives provide vital healthcare, education, rehabilitation and community support services to some of the most vulnerable people in society.

Supporting Dignity, Inclusion and Opportunity Across Africa

Through supporting the direct employment of staff across Zambia, Mozambique and Kenya, SJOG Foundation sustains and develops projects that promote dignity, inclusion, independence and opportunity. As international aid funding becomes increasingly uncertain, your charitable support plays a vital role in ensuring these life-changing services can continue to grow and respond to local needs.

Zambia: Supporting Rehabilitation, Inclusion and Education

For almost four decades, the Holy Family Rehabilitation Centre in Monze has been a beacon of hope for children and adults with disabilities. Established in 1986, the centre provides holistic rehabilitation services for people with intellectual, physical and sensory disabilities, supporting them to live fulfilling lives.

The centre’s specialist physiotherapy department helps adults recover function, maintain independence and manage complex conditions including stroke, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and diabetes-related amputations. For children, multidisciplinary teams of teachers, therapists, nurses, social workers and prosthetic specialists work together to help each child realise their potential while supporting families to overcome the challenges often associated with disability.

Inclusive Education for Every Child

One of the most impactful projects we currently support in Monze is an accessible and inclusive primary school. Created in partnership with local families and educators, the school welcomes children with and without disabilities, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn, belong and thrive together.
The school has fully accessible classrooms, a science laboratory, library, dining facilities and specialist supports designed to meet diverse educational and physical needs. The programme provides family support initiatives, education outreach and training opportunities for children who are unable to access traditional schooling.
By supporting inclusive education, we are helping to create communities where disability is never a barrier to opportunity.

Kenya: Delivering Water Security and Sustainable Development

Access to water changes everything. It supports healthcare, enables education, strengthens local economies and creates healthier, safer communities for future generations.

In Meru County, access to clean water continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing local communities. Water shortages affect health, food security, agriculture, sanitation and livelihoods, while prolonged droughts and climate change continue to place additional pressure on already limited resources.

To address these challenges, St John of God Hospital developed a sustainable borehole water system that now provides a reliable source of clean water for the hospital and surrounding communities.

This has significantly improved the availability, accessibility and quality of water while reducing the environmental impact caused by leaks and inefficiencies in the previous supply system. Beyond meeting immediate needs, the project is helping communities adapt to the realities of climate change, strengthening resilience and improving quality of life for local families.

Mozambique: Mental Health Care, Community Outreach and Women’s Empowerment

In Nampula, northern Mozambique, we provide annual support to the Brothers in providing a specialist Mental Health Centre in partnership with the Ministry of Health. Serving a region of approximately 13 million people, the centre provides inpatient and outpatient mental health services to individuals and families who often have limited access to specialist support.

The centre plays a critical role in responding to the challenges faced by communities affected by poverty, displacement and the impacts of natural disasters such as cyclones. Alongside clinical care, St John of God teams deliver outreach programmes that bring mental health support directly into communities, challenging the stigmas faced by those who need support, and ensure vulnerable people are not left behind.
