Malawi’s mental health system is unable to cope with the current needs of the population. A lack of qualified staff and inadequate facilities makes the lives of people living with mental health problems even more difficult.
There are only two mental health hospitals that offer admission for the whole of Malawi. Saint John of God House of Hospitality is one of these, a psychiatric referral unit located in Mzuzu, serving the entire Northern region of Malawi.
Saint John of God House of Hospitality in Mzuzu is a residential care unit for clients with acute mental health illness. The centre has 39 beds for short term treatments.
For those who live outside of Mzuzu it’s hard for them to reach the centre to receive much needed examinations and check-ups. For this reason, in 2015 the Saint John of God Mental Health Mobile Outreach Clinic was established. The Outreach team is travelling the entire Northern region to monitor those who have been recently discharged from the hospital and to visit other patients who need medication and support.
