Child Development Centre
The Child Development Centre is located in Mzuzu and provides support to children with disabilities. The centre takes an integrated approach and creates a personalised plan for each child attending the centre. The services provided include:
An Early Intervention programme: a home based care service delivered by physiotherapists and trained volunteers, visits are conducted in the family home. Mothers are empowered to engage with their children to help progress to their developmental stage.
A Postural Management service is also offered for infants and children to assist in their mobility.
Parental counselling the Positive Parenting Group is a space where parents can share their concerns on their children’s disabilities and their expected developmental issues. A counsellor facilitates every meeting.
The Elvira Institute is a school for special education in Mzuzu, which offers children with intellectual and physical disabilities a chance to learn as many skills as they can. The school accommodates an average of 68 children with a special education need.
