Umoza – Street Children programme

Founded in 1997, Umoza Children’s Program works with children operating in and on the streets of Mzuzu City. The main aim is to support the children to improve their life condition and, when possible, to return to their parents or village. Unfortunately, in recent years, many children were unable to go back to their families and older children have been supported to proceed through second and third level education. The programme covers a wide range of areas:

  • Basic Education and Prevocational Skills
  • Health, hygiene, self-image and esteem
  • Temporary accommodation and repatriation of children from distant areas
  • Behavioural Change
  • Improvement of household livelihoods
  • Positive parenting for Guardians
  • Individual counselling
  • Recreation & Sports

In December 2015, the Umoza Ginesa Children’s Home was opened, providing appropriate accommodation for these vulnerable children.
